HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CAR NEEDS SUSPENSION REPAIR?

Inside The Shop

In order to keep you and your passengers safe your vehicle is outfitted with numerous features. While some of the safety features may be obvious, such as the brakes, airbags, seatbelts and so on and so forth, there is one system you may not think of, well at least not in terms of safety. The suspension system is more often than not associated with ride comfort. While it is responsible for keeping everything rolling down the road smoothly by absorbing any bumps in the road, it also plays a huge role in your safety.

What does the suspension do?

Understandably you recognize that the suspension system is what keeps the car ride comfortable by letting the wheels move up and down over bumps and stabilizing the body of the vehicle on rough terrain. However, while it is keeping everything comfy it is also keeping it safe. The suspension is tasked with ensuring all four wheels remain on the ground at any given time, maximizing braking power when it is needed. It also prevents your car from rolling over while cornering by shifting the vehicle’s center of gravity. If you ever run into any of the following suspension problems don’t hesitate to get in touch with your local auto technician to schedule suspension repair.

One corner of the car is low

If one corner of your vehicle appears to be lower than the rest but all of the tires are properly inflated it is likely that the shocks or struts have failed. They will need to be replaced as this problem can cause drifting and increased tire wear.

Oil on the struts

If you suspect suspension issues run a rag along the struts to see if there is any oil on them. Struts use a special oil to help absorb the road’s unevenness and should it begin to leak your ride will become much more rigid.

Rollover sensation

Anytime it ever feels like your car is going to roll over while cornering don’t hesitate to get to the repair shop. This likely means that your vehicle’s anti-sway bar has failed and will need to be replaced.

Excessive bouncing

There is a quick test you can do to check the health of your suspension. Push on the hood or trunk of your car to get it to start bouncing. After you stop pushing the car should return to its normal ride height within 3-4 bounces. Any more than that and it is likely that suspension components will need to be replaced.
