A common problem for the Nissan RE5R05A transmission is antifreeze getting into the transmission fluid. The radiator cooler for the transmission is prone to cross leaks in certain Nissan models (Pathfinder, Xterra, Armada, Frontier, Titan, and certain Infiniti models as well).
Antifreeze is bad for the transmission for two reasons. First, the chemicals in antifreeze eat away at the clutch linings inside the trans. Second, in the RE5R05A trans, the computer is located inside the pan and is submerged in transmission fluid. These computer systems don’t mind being bathed in oil…but they do mind getting water in their circuits.
The fix for this problem is a complete transmission rebuild with a new computer, which costs about $4000. The good news is that there is a simple way to prevent this problem from happening. To keep antifreeze out of the transmission fluid, you simply need to bypass the radiator cooler and install an external cooler for the transmission. This is a $300 repair in most cases.
