The 7.3 Powerstroke can still be found on the road, and on the ranches and farms all across the nation. The first electronically controlled diesel engine installed for light-truck usage, this engine is still highly sought after 14 years after it’s demise.
Unfortunately like many other light-duty diesel trucks of that era, the automatic transmissions found in those trucks left a lot to be desired. The ½ ton trucks that those early transmissions were intended to serve were no match for the torque of the ¾ & 1 ton trucks that the 7.3 Powerstroke powered. Combine the added weight of the rig, the power of the engine and the owners using those diesels for their intended purposes, towing; many of those 4R100 and E4OD transmissions lived short lives.
